How to ask your lab to scan your film differently

Labs scan to a default look, but most will happily scan to your taste if you ask clearly. Tell them the direction you want in plain words: brighter, flatter, warmer, more contrast, or a specific resolution. Point at a frame or a past roll you liked. The clearer and more specific you are, the closer the result, so name the look rather than just saying 'better'.
Know what you can and cannot ask for
Scanning is interpretation, so brightness, contrast, colour balance and crop are all adjustable. What you cannot ask for is detail that the negative never captured, like shadow detail in an underexposed frame. Knowing the line saves everyone time.
The fixable list is long: warmer or cooler colour, more or less contrast, brighter or darker, tighter or looser crop, higher resolution, and removing or keeping the frame border. Almost all of that is a setting, not a reshoot.
Use words labs actually use
Vague feedback like 'they look off' makes the lab guess. Specific, named directions get you what you want.
- 'Can you scan a stop brighter' instead of 'too dark'
- 'Scan flatter so I can edit' instead of 'less intense'
- 'Warmer, these feel a bit cold' instead of 'wrong colour'
- 'A higher-res scan of frames 12 and 15' instead of 'bigger files'
- 'Match the look of my last roll' if you liked a previous one
Point at the exact frame
The single most useful thing you can do is reference one specific frame rather than the whole roll. 'Frame 12 is too dark and the sky is cyan' tells the operator exactly what to adjust. 'The roll looks weird' tells them nothing.
It also lets the lab fix just what is wrong rather than re-doing everything, which means a faster turnaround for you.
Save your preference so you stop re-asking
If you keep asking the same lab for the same look, ask them to save it as your default. Many labs will happily note 'this customer likes them flat and warm' so every future roll comes back closer to right.
