Frontier vs Noritsu: what's the difference in film scans?
By Owen Fisher · Last updated 28 May 2026
Fuji Frontier and Noritsu are the two scanners most film labs run. Frontier scans tend to look punchy, warm and 'finished' straight away, while Noritsu scans are usually higher resolution and flatter, with more room to edit. Neither is better; they just have different default looks. The operator's settings and the lab's habits matter as much as the scanner brand.
What a Fuji Frontier scan looks like
Frontier scans have a punchy, pleasing look out of the box. Contrast is a little higher, skin tones come out warm and flattering, and colours pop. It is the look a lot of people picture when they think 'film'. Resolution is slightly lower than a Noritsu, but plenty for web and normal prints.
If you want scans you can post straight away with little editing, a Frontier lab is a safe bet.
What a Noritsu scan looks like
Noritsu scans tend to be higher resolution and more neutral. The default is flatter, holding more detail in highlights and shadows, which gives you more room to edit. Grain is resolved more sharply, and hybrid shooters who like to finish their own colour often prefer it.
If you want maximum detail, big prints, or full editing control, a high-res Noritsu scan is usually the one to ask for.
Which one should you ask for?
There is no wrong answer, but here is a rough guide.
- Want a finished, warm, ready-to-post look: Frontier
- Want maximum detail and editing room: Noritsu
- Shoot mostly black and white: either works, ask the lab what they prefer
- Not fussed: it honestly won't matter much for most rolls
Why the lab matters more than the scanner
The scanner is only half the story. The operator sets the white balance, the density, and the crop, and those choices change the result more than the badge on the machine. A careful operator on either scanner beats a careless one on the 'better' scanner.
Consistency comes from telling the lab the look you want and them remembering it, not from chasing a particular model.
How to get the look you want
Ask your lab which scanner they run, and whether they can scan the look you prefer. Some labs have both and will use whichever you like. Once you find a look that works, ask them to save it so every roll comes back the same.
Filmara keeps that preference with you across the labs you use, and lets you ask the lab about a specific frame so you can dial in the look together instead of guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Is Frontier or Noritsu higher resolution?
Noritsu generally offers higher maximum resolution, while Frontier is a touch lower but still plenty for web and standard prints. If you need large prints or heavy cropping, ask your lab for a high-resolution Noritsu scan.
Can I ask my lab which scanner they use?
Yes, it is a completely normal question and many labs list it anyway. Some run both a Frontier and a Noritsu and will scan on whichever you prefer. Just ask before you send your roll.
Why do scans look different at two labs using the same scanner?
Because the operators set them up differently. White balance, density and contrast are human choices, so the same scanner gives different results in different hands. The fix is to tell each lab the look you want rather than assuming the model decides it.
Or just ask the lab that scanned it
Filmara lets you circle a frame and ask your film lab about it directly, with their answer kept on the roll. Every roll from every lab you use, in one place.
